The easy accessibility and almost zero learning curve have resulted in mass generation of AI content. When a user comes online to search for specific information or consume content, it is important that the quality and authenticity of the content are maintained. This is exactly why Google launched SynthID back in 2023. In the last three years, SynthID has enabled users to differentiate between AI-generated content and human content by using subtle watermarks across AI images, audio, and video content. Up until October 2026, SynthID has watermarked 180 million+ images and videos, and 240,000 years’ worth of audio clips.
2025 witnessed the early version of the SynthID Detector. This early version was used by media professionals to verify whether or not, a given piece of content is genuine or AI-generated. October 7 onwards, the same version has been made available to everyone. SynthID is available for use globally in English.
This all-new SynthID Detector enables everyone to verify whether an audio, image, or video is made using Google’s AI tool, or OpenAI, Kakao, NVIDIA, or Apple (work in progress).
SynthID Detector will come pre-equipped as a built-in verification feature in the Gemini App, Search, and Chrome. The ultimate goal is to educate users and help them consume content with confidence and knowledge.
SynthID Detector is a great step towards preventing fake content from spreading online. In an era where a piece of content can go viral in minutes, this tool is actually capable of maintaining authenticity and sanity among users.
